Velum AI Policy
1. Purpose of This Policy
Velum uses artificial intelligence to support dream journaling, dream enrichment, and guided dream work.
This AI Policy explains:
- What AI features Velum uses
- What user data may be processed by AI systems
- What Velum does and does not store
- How dream work generation works
- What limitations apply to AI-generated content
- What users should not rely on AI outputs for
- How users remain in control of their dream material
Velum is designed as a reflective and symbolic tool. It is not a medical, therapeutic, diagnostic, crisis, legal, financial, or professional advisory service.
2. Summary
Velum may use AI to help users:
- Generate dream titles
- Summarize dream content
- Identify symbols, motifs, and recurring images
- Identify emotional tones
- Identify people, places, themes, and narrative patterns
- Search and organize dream material
- Generate dream work prompts
- Generate guided dream work outputs
- Support methods such as Reflection, Association, Structure Analysis, Re-entry, Compensation, Gestalt / Dialogue, and Amplification
Velum does not claim that AI can objectively interpret dreams, diagnose the user, reveal hidden truth, predict the future, or replace human judgment.
Dreams are personal, symbolic, and context-dependent. AI outputs should be treated as interpretive suggestions, not final answers.
3. AI Features in Velum
Velum may use AI or automated systems for the following features.
3.1 Dream Title Generation
Velum may suggest or generate a title for a dream based on the dream entry.
The title is intended to help organize the archive. It may be edited, replaced, or deleted by the user.
3.2 Dream Summary
Velum may generate a summary of a dream to help the user revisit the dream quickly.
The summary may omit details, simplify events, misread emphasis, or phrase the dream differently than the user intended.
The original dream entry remains the primary record.
3.3 Symbolic Enrichment
Velum may identify symbolic material in the dream, including:
- Objects
- Animals
- Settings
- People
- Places
- Actions
- Conflicts
- Thresholds
- Doors, roads, vehicles, houses, bodies of water, weather, clothing, tools, and other recurring dream imagery
Symbolic enrichment is not definitive. A symbol’s meaning depends on the user’s own associations, life context, emotional response, and dream sequence.
3.4 Emotional Enrichment
Velum may identify emotional tones in a dream, such as:
- Fear
- Longing
- Shame
- Curiosity
- Grief
- Desire
- Confusion
- Awe
- Anger
- Relief
- Tension
- Nostalgia
AI-generated emotional labels may be incorrect or incomplete. Users should rely on their own felt sense when reviewing emotional interpretations.
3.5 People, Places, and Themes
Velum may identify named or unnamed people, relationship patterns, settings, places, and themes in a dream.
Examples include:
- Family figures
- Former friends or partners
- Unknown figures
- Childhood locations
- Workplaces
- Schools
- Roads
- Houses
- Public spaces
- Repeated conflicts
- Repeated choices
- Repeated emotional dilemmas
Velum may infer themes from the dream text. These inferences may be wrong.
3.6 Pattern Discovery
Velum may help surface recurring images, emotions, figures, settings, or themes across dreams.
Pattern discovery is intended to help users reflect on their archive. It does not prove psychological causation, pathology, fate, prophecy, or objective truth.
3.7 Dream Search Support
Velum may use structured dream metadata to help users search their archive by:
- Title
- Date
- Symbol
- Image
- Emotion
- Person
- Place
- Theme
- Motif
- Dream work status
- Bookmark status
Search and filtering features may depend on local data, generated metadata, or user-created data.
3.8 Dream Work Generation
Velum may use AI to generate guided dream work sessions and outputs.
Dream work methods may include:
- Reflection: A focused first-pass interpretation of the dream’s emotional and symbolic material.
- Association: A Jungian method for tracing personal links, memories, and affects around specific dream images.
- Structure Analysis: A formal reading of the dream’s sequence, tensions, reversals, and internal architecture.
- Re-entry: A Jungian active imagination approach for returning to the dream scene and engaging it directly.
- Compensation: A Jungian reading of the dream as a compensatory response to the conscious attitude.
- Gestalt / Dialogue: A dialogical method for speaking from dream figures, objects, and inner positions.
- Amplification: A symbolic method that expands a dream image through mythic, cultural, and archetypal parallels.
These methods are reflective frameworks. They are not clinical treatment.
4. Data Used for AI Processing
Depending on the feature, Velum may process some or all of the following:
- Dream text entered by the user
- Voice transcription text, if voice capture is used
- Dream title
- Dream date
- User edits to dream content
- Dream work method selected by the user
- User answers during a guided dream work flow
- Locally stored dream metadata
- Generated symbols, emotions, people, places, and themes
- Context needed to generate a dream work result
Velum sends only the minimum content reasonably needed to generate the requested output.
5. Local Storage and AI Processing
Velum is designed so that dream data and dream work data are stored locally on the user’s device unless otherwise clearly stated.
However, some AI features may require dream content or related user-provided information to be sent to an AI provider for processing.
This means:
- Dream entries may be stored locally on the device.
- Generated dream work results may be stored locally on the device.
- Intermediate guided question-and-answer steps may be used during generation.
- Intermediate dream work Q&A steps are not stored as permanent dream records unless explicitly saved by the app or user.
- AI processing may involve temporary transmission of relevant dream material to an AI service provider.
- Velum does not treat AI output as a verified professional conclusion.
Users should not use AI features with content they do not want processed for generation.
6. Intermediate Dream Work Steps
Some Velum dream work flows may ask the user questions before generating a result.
These intermediate steps may include:
- Clarifying questions
- Associations
- Emotional responses
- Scene details
- Figure dialogue
- User-selected symbols
- User-selected dream images
- Short answers used to guide generation
Velum’s intended retention model is:
- Intermediate Q&A steps are used to generate the dream work output.
- Intermediate Q&A steps are not stored as permanent dream records.
- The final generated dream work result may be stored locally as part of the dream work record.
This approach is intended to reduce unnecessary retention of sensitive reflective material.
7. AI Providers
Velum may use third-party AI service providers to generate outputs.
These providers may include, for example:
- Large language model providers
- Speech-to-text or transcription providers
- Cloud infrastructure providers
- Related service providers needed to deliver AI functionality
Current providers include Claude (Anthropic). Velum’s use of third-party providers is also described in the Privacy Policy.
Velum configures providers, where reasonably available, to limit retention, training, or reuse of user content.
8. Model Training and Improvement
Velum does not use private dream entries, dream work content, or intermediate dream work answers to train AI models.
Velum may use aggregated, de-identified, or technical information to improve app reliability, safety, performance, and user experience, where permitted by law and described in the Privacy Policy.
9. Human Review
Velum does not routinely read private dream entries.
However, human review may occur in limited circumstances, such as:
- The user voluntarily contacts support and includes dream content
- The user submits feedback containing dream content
- Debugging a technical issue with user permission
- Investigating abuse, fraud, security incidents, or legal requests
- Complying with applicable law
- Reviewing app safety or policy issues, if applicable
Users should avoid sending support messages containing sensitive dream content unless necessary.
If a user sends dream content to support, it may be processed as support data according to the Privacy Policy and Document Retention Policy.
10. Accuracy and Reliability Limits
AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, generic, inappropriate, emotionally intense, or not applicable to the user’s situation.
Velum does not guarantee that AI outputs will be:
