Velum AI Policy

1. Purpose of This Policy

Velum uses artificial intelligence to support dream journaling, dream enrichment, and guided dream work.

This AI Policy explains:

Velum is designed as a reflective and symbolic tool. It is not a medical, therapeutic, diagnostic, crisis, legal, financial, or professional advisory service.

2. Summary

Velum may use AI to help users:

Velum does not claim that AI can objectively interpret dreams, diagnose the user, reveal hidden truth, predict the future, or replace human judgment.

Dreams are personal, symbolic, and context-dependent. AI outputs should be treated as interpretive suggestions, not final answers.

3. AI Features in Velum

Velum may use AI or automated systems for the following features.

3.1 Dream Title Generation

Velum may suggest or generate a title for a dream based on the dream entry.

The title is intended to help organize the archive. It may be edited, replaced, or deleted by the user.

3.2 Dream Summary

Velum may generate a summary of a dream to help the user revisit the dream quickly.

The summary may omit details, simplify events, misread emphasis, or phrase the dream differently than the user intended.

The original dream entry remains the primary record.

3.3 Symbolic Enrichment

Velum may identify symbolic material in the dream, including:

Symbolic enrichment is not definitive. A symbol’s meaning depends on the user’s own associations, life context, emotional response, and dream sequence.

3.4 Emotional Enrichment

Velum may identify emotional tones in a dream, such as:

AI-generated emotional labels may be incorrect or incomplete. Users should rely on their own felt sense when reviewing emotional interpretations.

3.5 People, Places, and Themes

Velum may identify named or unnamed people, relationship patterns, settings, places, and themes in a dream.

Examples include:

Velum may infer themes from the dream text. These inferences may be wrong.

3.6 Pattern Discovery

Velum may help surface recurring images, emotions, figures, settings, or themes across dreams.

Pattern discovery is intended to help users reflect on their archive. It does not prove psychological causation, pathology, fate, prophecy, or objective truth.

3.7 Dream Search Support

Velum may use structured dream metadata to help users search their archive by:

Search and filtering features may depend on local data, generated metadata, or user-created data.

3.8 Dream Work Generation

Velum may use AI to generate guided dream work sessions and outputs.

Dream work methods may include:

These methods are reflective frameworks. They are not clinical treatment.

4. Data Used for AI Processing

Depending on the feature, Velum may process some or all of the following:

Velum sends only the minimum content reasonably needed to generate the requested output.

5. Local Storage and AI Processing

Velum is designed so that dream data and dream work data are stored locally on the user’s device unless otherwise clearly stated.

However, some AI features may require dream content or related user-provided information to be sent to an AI provider for processing.

This means:

Users should not use AI features with content they do not want processed for generation.

6. Intermediate Dream Work Steps

Some Velum dream work flows may ask the user questions before generating a result.

These intermediate steps may include:

Velum’s intended retention model is:

This approach is intended to reduce unnecessary retention of sensitive reflective material.

7. AI Providers

Velum may use third-party AI service providers to generate outputs.

These providers may include, for example:

Current providers include Claude (Anthropic). Velum’s use of third-party providers is also described in the Privacy Policy.

Velum configures providers, where reasonably available, to limit retention, training, or reuse of user content.

8. Model Training and Improvement

Velum does not use private dream entries, dream work content, or intermediate dream work answers to train AI models.

Velum may use aggregated, de-identified, or technical information to improve app reliability, safety, performance, and user experience, where permitted by law and described in the Privacy Policy.

9. Human Review

Velum does not routinely read private dream entries.

However, human review may occur in limited circumstances, such as:

Users should avoid sending support messages containing sensitive dream content unless necessary.

If a user sends dream content to support, it may be processed as support data according to the Privacy Policy and Document Retention Policy.

10. Accuracy and Reliability Limits

AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, generic, inappropriate, emotionally intense, or not applicable to the user’s situation.

Velum does not guarantee that AI outputs will be:

Users should treat AI outputs as prompts for reflection, not as authoritative statements.

11. No Diagnosis or Therapy

Velum does not diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure any medical, psychiatric, psychological, sleep-related, or emotional condition.

AI outputs from Velum should not be used to diagnose or evaluate:

Velum does not provide psychotherapy, counseling, crisis support, emergency services, or clinical interpretation.

If users need medical, psychiatric, psychological, or crisis support, they should contact a qualified professional or emergency service.

In the United States, users may call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Outside the United States, users should contact their local emergency number or crisis hotline.

12. No Future Prediction or Objective Truth Claims

Velum does not claim that AI dream interpretation can:

Dream work outputs are symbolic and interpretive.

13. User Responsibility

Users are responsible for:

Velum provides tools for reflection. The user remains responsible for their choices, interpretations, and actions.

14. Sensitive Dreams and Distressing Content

Dreams may include disturbing or sensitive content, including:

AI-generated dream work may intensify emotional material or surface interpretations the user finds unsettling.

Users should stop using AI dream work features if they feel overwhelmed, unsafe, destabilized, or distressed.

Velum does not present AI outputs as final, absolute, or morally authoritative.

15. Bias and Cultural Limits

AI systems may reflect biases, assumptions, or limitations in their training data, provider design, language, and cultural framing.

This may affect interpretations involving:

Velum uses careful, non-dogmatic, and culturally humble language. Users should interpret outputs through their own context and values.

16. Content Safety Limits

Velum may refuse, limit, or alter AI outputs in certain circumstances, including when prompts or content request:

Velum may also provide safer, more general, or more supportive responses when content appears emotionally intense or risky.

17. Voice Capture and Transcription

If Velum includes voice capture mode, audio may be processed to create text.

Voice capture in Velum is processed locally on-device. Audio may be stored locally if the user chooses to save it. Users should avoid recording content they do not want processed.

18. User Controls

Velum provides user controls including:

Local deletion behavior may depend on the device, operating system, backups, exports, and app settings.

19. AI Output Ownership

To the extent permitted by law and subject to the Terms of Service, users may use, save, export, and personally rely on AI-generated outputs created from their own dream content.

Velum does not claim ownership over the user’s original dream entries.

Velum may retain ownership of its app design, prompts, workflows, method structures, branding, interface, and proprietary systems.

AI-generated content may not be unique. Similar or identical outputs may be generated for other users.

20. Restrictions on AI Use

Users may not use Velum’s AI features to:

Violations may result in suspension or termination.

21. Changes to AI Systems

Velum may change AI features over time.

Changes may include:

AI outputs may change as models, prompts, or app logic change.

Velum does not guarantee that the same dream will produce the same result every time.

22. Availability of AI Features

AI features may be unavailable, delayed, limited, or degraded due to:

Velum does not guarantee uninterrupted AI access.

23. Security

Velum takes reasonable measures to protect data involved in AI processing, but no system is perfectly secure.

Risks may include:

Users should protect their devices, use strong device authentication, enable Velum’s Lock Screen where available, and avoid sharing exported dream files carelessly.

24. Legal Requests and Safety Obligations

Velum may disclose account data, support data, or other data when required by law, legal process, court order, government request, or to protect rights, safety, security, and integrity.

Because Velum is designed for local storage, Velum may not have access to locally stored dream entries unless they have been transmitted for AI processing, support, account functionality, analytics, crash reporting, cloud services, or other disclosed purposes.

25. Children and Minors

Velum is intended for users 18 years of age or older. Velum is not directed to children or minors.

Velum does not knowingly allow users under 18 to create accounts or use AI-assisted features. If Velum learns that a user under 18 has created an account, Velum may suspend or delete that account.

26. Relationship to Other Policies

This AI Policy works together with:

If this AI Policy conflicts with the Privacy Policy on data handling, the Privacy Policy controls for privacy-specific issues.

If this AI Policy conflicts with the Terms of Service on liability or permitted use, the Terms of Service controls.
